Children's Hospital news Big Hearts Guild donates big money for little procedures
A lot of little stomachs will benefit from the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guild meeting that took place January 16. Guild members presented a check for $25,000 to Michael Walter, MD, director of the GI lab, who will use the money to purchase a pediatric endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) scope. The scope is a flexible tube, approximately the size of a finger. It contains a lens and a light source that allows an endoscopist to either look into the scope or at a TV monitor. If the image is reflected on a TV monitor, it is magnified many times so the endoscopist can see minute changes in tissue. The pediatric ERCP scope is specifically designed to allow the procedure to be done on smaller patients. It is the newest addition to the list of projects the guild has provided funding for at the Children's Hospital, including a high-frequency ventilator, a digital x-ray projector, and the SAFE KIDS injury prevention program.
