Psychiatry department
announces faculty member of the year

William Murdoch, MD, was named Psychiatry Faculty Member of the Year 2003 by
the department of psychiatry at its annual faculty dinner meeting on January
28, 2004. William McGhee, MD, vice chair of psychiatry department, presented
the award and cited Dr. Murdoch’s extraordinary leadership as medical director
of the Behavioral Medicine Center, his initiative in developing a faculty/resident
child/adolscent clinic, and his leadership in organizing the department to respond
to the San Bernardino mountain fires as specific contributions during the year
2003.
"Dr. Murdoch’s willingness to respond to need and develop programs
to meet those needs has been exemplary," says Dr. McGhee.
While leading the department’s response to the San Bernardino mountain
fires, faculty and residents provided mental health services to those affected
by the devastating wild fires. In addition, he is co-chair of the international
behavioral health trauma team with Beverly Buckles, DSW, chair, department of
social work, and has traveled to Guam, Central America, and South America to
train pastors in how to respond and deal with psychological traumas.
"This award is appointed by faculty as it recognizes the excellence of
service," states George T. Harding, MD, department chair. "We trust
that is inspires members of faculty to go a little bit further in the coming
years."
Dr. Murdoch received a plaque and an honorarium to use towards continuing education
or to obtain equipment for his academic clinical work.
At the annual faculty dinner meeting, Dr. Harding gave a report on goals accomplished
during the 2003 and objectives of 2004. Additional reports were given by Mark
Haviland, PhD, director of research; Dr. Murdoch; George Christison, MD, associate
professor, psychiatry, SM; Mary Ann Schaepper, MD, assistant professor, psychiatry,
SM; and Dr. McGhee.
Held in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center, 72 members of the faculty,
spouses, and guests attended the dinner meeting. Cameron Johnson, MD, assistant
professor, psychiatry, was master of ceremonies, and H. Roger Hadley, MD, dean,
School of Medicine made remarks. Special music was provided by Amanda Hall and
Abdiel Gonzales, both senior voice majors at La Sierra University, and accompanied
by Kimo Smith.
The Psychiatry Faculty Member of the Year Award is presented annually. Current
members of faculty who received the award in past years include: Donald Anderson,
MD; William Britt, PhD; Julie Albert, DSW; Micheal Cummings, MD; James Dyer,
LCSW; and William McGee, MD.
