American Osler Society selects Dr. Longo as president of medical historians
At its recent meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, the American Osler Society (AOS) selected as its president Lawrence D. Longo, MD, director of the Center for Perinatal Biology, and distinguished professor of physiology and obstetrics and gynecology. The American Osler Society is an international group of eminent medical historians who are devoted to promulgating the work of Sir William Osler (1849 to 1919). In addition to members in the United States and Canada, the Society includes members from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan. Dr. Osler, considered by many to have been the greatest physician of the past century, was a Canadian, who as professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, did much to develop academic medical education in the United States and Canada. He also played a key role in development of the residency system in the various specialties as we know it today. Later, as regius professor of medicine at Oxford University in England, Dr. Osler did much to advance medical education and the foundation of the Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom. In addition, Dr. Osler played an important role in organization of medical health-care services in Great Britain during World War I. Dr. Longo has served on the AOS Council for many years, and was secretary-treasurer for 12 years (1988 to 2000). As president, Dr. Longo’s three goals for the society are to strengthen its commitment to human values among physicians, to broaden opportunities in education in the history of medicine and the health sciences, and to enlarge the scope of the society in public affairs. Dr. Longo’s most recent book, with Philip M. Teigen of the National Library of Medicine, is Dearest G, Yours W.O.: William Osler’s Letters from Egypt to Grace Revere Osler is being published by the McGill University Press, Montreal, Canada.
