School of Public Health newsSchool of Public Health awards students, says farewell to dean
The School of Public Health held a special awards banquet on June 10, 2004. Not only did they recognize many students for their accomplishments, but the faculty surprised Patricia K. Johnston, DrPH, MS, RD, dean of SPH, with a farewell ceremony. After 25 years of service to the School of Public Health, Dr. Johnston will be retiring to Minnesota. On the program, Christine Neish, PhD, MPH, RN, associate dean, academic affairs, SPH, was to give the benediction--instead she gave an introduction to Dr. Johnston's farewell ceremony. "I was very surprised!" says Dr. Johnston. "I'm overwhelmed with all the good wishes and love that was shared by everyone." During the farewell ceremony, Albin Grohar, PhD, executive director, advancement, LLU, played a special song on his guitar after he told Dr. Johnston, "You have a room full of love and affection in this place." Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, chancellor of LLU, listed all the many accomplishments of Dr. Johnston and told her thank you for her service. Joan Sabaté, MD, DrPH, chair/professor, nutrition, SPH, announced that a nutrition fund for scholarships would be named after Dr. Johnston. Dr. Neish presented Dr. Johnston with a plaque honoring her for 25 years of service and astounding leadership. David Dyjack, DrPH, chair/associate professor, environmental/occupational health, SPH/SM, gave the toast by saying, "Since you're a nutritionist, I thought whole wheat toast would be appropriate," as he pulls out a piece of toast. After many laughs, he presented the expected toast. Last, a slide show full of memories and good times was shown, followed by everyone singing "Till We Meet Again." "Thank you from the bottom of my heart," replied Dr. Johnston. "If we don't see each other again on earth, we'll see each other in heaven."
