Memorial services held for LLU faculty member Dr. Charles Kean
Memorial services were held for Charles J. C. Kean, DVM, PhD, MBA, associate professor of physiology and pharmacology, School of Medicine, and director of the animal care facility at Loma Linda University, on Saturday, July 17, at the Redlands Methodist Church in Redlands. Dr. Kean died after a brief illness on June 25, 2004. Dr. Kean was born in Zambia, obtained the doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Dublin University in Ireland, and a doctor of philosophy degree from Bristol University in the United Kingdom. At Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Dr. Kean served as director of the animal care facility, and as veterinary medical officer at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VAMedical Center since 1985. Prior to this, Dr. Kean served as a research veterinarian at UCLA Medical Center for 12 years. "We are all saddened by the death of Dr. Kean," says Barry L. Taylor, PhD, vice chancellor for research affairs, Loma Linda University. "He was a pillar in the University who helped investigators undertake research while enhancing and urging ethical conduct." Dr. Kean is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Nicola, son Andrew, son-in-law Rob Brainin, and sister Rosalie Faull. The Loma Linda University School of Medicine class of 2006 held the first white coat ceremony for a medical student class since the inception of the University. The June 29 event commemorates the students' transition from the basic science years to the clinical years of their education. The class invited H. Roger Hadley, MD, dean, School of Medicine, to speak at the inaugural ceremony. "It is a privilege to educate such talented individuals," Dr. Hadley said in his opening. "I hope you recognize the privilege of treating patients." wear the white coat. Dr. Hadley charged the class with never abusing that trust. He asked each of the students to take ownership of their patients. Dr. Hadley finished by reminding the class that "you are always a doctor," even when not wearing the white coat. He encouraged them to not hide their talents, but to be willing to share their healing touch in every situation, whether it be bedside in a hospital or seatside in an airplane 30,000 feet high. During the program the students recognized the important role the alumni association plays. Patrick Crane, third-year medical student, also presented a humorous look at quotes from professors throughout the past two years, reminding students they don't have to take life seriously all the time. He continued to explain the significance of the white coat, and what it means to wear it. He discussed the sacred trust automatically given to those who wear the white coat.
