Annual Children's Day helps kids cope with hospital visits

In an effort to bolster hope, expression, and trust in kids when they visit the hospital, Loma Linda University Children's Hospital celebrated its 19th annual Children's Day on May 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This free event, recommended for kids 3 to 12, combined an interactive and educational approach to make children more comfortable with the hospital environment. Nearly 1,700 children attended this year's event, accompanied by another 500 adults.

The scores of children raced across the green lawn under the awnings being put up for the School of Medicine graduation. The kids vistied the features of the day that included the doll and stuffed animal clinic (a.k.a. the teddy bear clinic), where children bring their own stuffed toy and act as the doctor and nurse to check up and administer immunizations to their play patients. Besides interacting with the staff and volunteers, kids learned about what goes on in the hospital and how they can stay out of the hospital. They found out about germs, taking care of their hearts and lungs, eating the right foods, what it's like to be in the hospital, and what kinds of questions doctors will ask. Kids also benefited from the snake safety booth, set up by Sean Bush, MD, emergency physician at Loma Linda University Medical Center, and star of Animal Planet's "Venom ER" series. Also on display was the Loma Linda SAFE KIDS Coalition with information on carseat safety, bike-helmet safety, and general trauma prevention. The child life department also had information available about the services they offer at Children's Hospital.

Children's Hospital appreciates all of the volunteers who participated; without their help there could be no Children's Day event. Also a special thanks goes to the campus engineering department the child life staff.
