[Top] School of Pharmacy students win third place honors at national competition
Nearly 3,500 attendees gathered from March 31 to April 3 at the 16th annual meeting and showcase of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) in San Francisco, to learn about the latest trends shaping managed care pharmacy. On Friday, April 2, 2004, four students from the School of Pharmacy competed at the AMCP Student Chapter Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Competition and brought home the third place prize. The national student competition is intended to give students an opportunity to sharpen and test their literature evaluation skills. More importantly, the competition allowed students to view different styles and processes that can be used in effective formulary management. This year the focus was on analysis of an actual product dossier.
"Initially, 12 teams entered the competition," says Kelly Lee, PharmD, assistant professor, practice pharmacy and faculty team advisor, "but only the top eight teams went to the finals and received a $2,500 stipend as well." The teams, composed of four members, were asked to consolidate large volumes of clinical and economic data on the drug risedronate and present key facts to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics ( P&T) committee members. Judging was based on six components: a 3-page executive summary, a 5-page report on two questions posed by the committee, a 10-page P&T monograph, a 30-minute oral presentation, a 15-minute question and answer session, and additional subjective criteria. First- and second-year LLU students Lee Crumby, Anthony Nguyen, Joanna Robbins, and Joel Thacker were competing against mostly third- and fourthyear students from University of Maryland, Ohio State University, University of Illinois–Chicago, University of Southern California, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, and Drake University. "I am so proud of our students," beams Dr. Lee. "They worked hard to prepare for the competition, sacrificing a great deal of time outside of class. With only two months to prepare and not being allowed solicit help from faculty or faculty advisors, they remained determined to meet the challenge." Joel Thacker spoke for his fellow teammates saying, "It was hard work, but it was all about teamwork. Most importantly, we couldn't have done it without our advisor, Dr. Lee." The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's mission is to empower its members to serve society by using sound medication management principles and strategies to achieve positive patient outcomes. AMCP has more than 4,800 members nationally who provide comprehensive coverage and services to the more than 200 million Americans served by managed care.
