Freshmen medical student awarded Army scholarship
First-year medical student Erek Helseth has been awarded a three-year scholarship from the U.S. Army's F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). Mr. Helseth was sworn into the Army as a second lieutenant on Wednesday, May 17. Prospective or current students who qualify for the HPSP have their tuition fully paid, are reimbursed for the cost of books, equipment, and supplies, and receive a monthly stipend of more than $1,000. Once they are finished with their education and residency, students are required to "pay back" their time in the HPSP to the Army by working at a military health-care facility. Of the 19 Army HPSP students currently attending Loma Linda University, 10 are students in the School of Medicine: sophomore class--Joseph Cheat ham and Micaiah Kuzma; junior class--Elizabeth Geise, Russel Geise, and Richard Inae; and senior class--Don Anderson, David Dobson, Deanne Leyba, and Christopher Yamamoto. According to Captain Rhonda Palmore, a U.S. Army health-care recruiter, there are still scholarships available for the 2000ø2001 school year. She encourages freshman students enrolled in medicine, dentistry, and clinical psychology to apply for the scholarship. For more information, contact Captain Palmore at (800) 531-7859 or visit the Army web site at <www.goarmy.com>.
