Graduate School commencement

Donald W. Rigby, PhD, emeritus professor of biology, Walla Walla College, College Place, Washington, takes a moment to read the plaque he received just minutes before, honoring him as University Alumnus of the Year for 2002. The award was presented during the Graduate School commencement ceremony on June 9. Barton W. Rippon, PhD, dean of the Graduate School and School of Pharmacy, welcomes graduates, faculty, and guests to the commencement ceremony.
 
Jon Robertson, DMA, chair, department of music, University of California at Los Angeles, conductor of UCLA’s Philharmonia Orchestra, and conductor and music director of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra, speaks to the graduates about “The Forgotten Gift.”
 
Dr. Rippon congratulates Joni Thurber, MS, speech-language pathology new graduate, upon receiving the Dean’s Award for master’s programs.
Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, chancellor of Loma Linda University, welcomes graduates, faculty, and guests on behalf of the University.
 
Xiwei Wu, PhD (right), who finished a degree in the field of microbiology and molecular genetics, is congratulated by Dr. Hart upon receiving the LLU Chancellor’s Award. Applauding his accomplishment is B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS (center), president of Loma Linda University.
 
Mark Morton, MS (right), who is working toward his marital and family therapy doctorate, is congratulated by Dr. Rippon upon receiving the Dean’s Award for doctoral degree programs.
José Fuentes, PhD (right), new graduate from the department of psychology, and Lynette Rodriguez sing “The Prayer” for the musical selection.
 
Leonard R. Brand, PhD (right), professor of natural sciences, is congratulated by Dr. Rippon upon receiving the School Distinguished Service Award for 2002 “for his commitment and creative participation in the education of students for service to mankind and their Creator, and in recognition of his more than three decades of noteworthy service to [Loma Linda] University.”
