School of Dentistry participates in campus-wide disaster drill

The School of Dentistry participated in a campus-wide disaster drill on Wednesday, May 1. A mock chemical incident was staged and the fire department, law enforcement, an ambulance company, and various LLU&MC campus agencies worked together to practice their response. Employees were asked to stay within their buildings so that dangerous chemical fumes would not enter. In Prince Hall, exit monitors stood watch at each entrance to the building. A decontamination area was set up in a parking lot in front of LLUMC and the fire department practiced decontaminating victims, with ambulances waiting. |

During the Pierre Fauchard Academy Annual Luncheon in Anaheim, California, the Academy recently presented Ron Blank, DDS, associate professor, oral diagnosis, radiology, and pathology, School of Dentistry, with the Pierre Fauchard Academy Teacher of the Year Award. Michael Erickson, senior dental student, was also selected to receive an award from the Academy. Dr. Erickson received the Student of the Year Award for 2002.
In addition to the Pierre Fauchard Academy award, Dr. Blank was selected by School of Dentistry faculty and students to receive the first School of Dentistry Faculty of the Year Award which was presented to him during 2002 commencement ceremonies for the School.
Each year, the Pierre Fauchard Academy presents Teacher of the Year and Student of the Year Awards to faculty and students in each of the three Schools of Dentistry in Southern California.
The Pierre Fauchard Academy, named for the father of modern dentistry, is an honorary dental service organization that was organized in 1936. Its founder, Elmer S. Best, was a Minnesota dentist. Troubled by the proprietary nature of many dental publications, he hoped to help the profession gain control of its own literature and assure its independence from commercial interests. The academy has become a global organization with 119 sections; 55 in the United States and 64 overseas. The current membership stands at more than 7,000 worldwide, with in excess of 4,000 plus in United States, 2,000 international, and more than 1,100 life fellows.

The school provided matching funds which made it possible for the department to purchase a new patient chair and unit, an operator’s chair, and a dental assistant’s chair. Dr. Chi was invited to the school on May 30, to see the new equipment. A plaque reading “Renovation of this operatory was made possible by a gift from Ching Roo Chi, DDS, 2002,” was placed in the operatory. |
