Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center news LLUAHSC celebrates nurses
Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center celebrated national nurses week during the second week of May. As part of the celebration, nursing administration provided pie à la mode for the nursing staff at the Medical Center, Community Medical Center, and Behavioral Medicine Center. Representatives from the Loma Linda City Fire Department and the San Bernardino City Fire Department were special guest servers who helped cut the pie and hand them out to the nurses for both the night shift and the day shift. The firefighters served more than 300 pies, as nurses chose from cherry, apple, peach, and blackberry flavors. At the Medical Center, the pies were served outside in the courtyard between the main lobbies of the Childrens Hospital and the Medical Center. The pies were set atop tables with red, white, and blue coverings. It makes you feel good that were getting recognized, says Betzi Butler, RN, a nurse on the pediatric acute and rehab units. It kind of takes the monotony out of your day, adds Mona Marinel, RN, also a nurse on the pediatric acute and rehab units. And youre like, Oh yeah, they do remember us. The firefighters were glad to help recognize the importance of nurses. Fire Captain Rick Winn and two of his firefighters enjoyed passing out pie to the nurses at the Community Medical Center. Everybody loves a nurse, smiles Captain Winn. Jan Kroetz, RN, executive director for medical/surgical, and Margie Tessener, RN, clinical director of nursing, were on hand at the CMC to help show their appreciation of the nurses under their administration.
Several administrators showed up at the Medical Center in support of the nurses. B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, president and CEO of LLUAHSC, came out to the courtyard, donned a white apron, and served punch for the nurses to drink with their pie. Also present were Zareh Sarrafian, MBA, senior vice president/administrator for Childrens Hospital; Donald G. Pursley, DBA, executive vice president for finance and administration and CFO for LLUAHSC; Renee Hills, RN, MS, executive director of quality resoruce management; Cindy Glascow, assistant director of quality resource management; and Marie Hodgkins, RN, MBA, director of nursing resources. Joy Riddle, RN, from nursing resources, supervised the pie-filled event and was thrilled to see so many nurses turn out for the gesture of appreciation. Ms. Riddle arranged for the fire departments to serve the pie. Even in the midst of their own celebration, the high caliber of LLUAHSC nurses was evident Wednesday afternoon. A mother brought her little girl, a patient at the Childrens Hospital, out to the courtyard in a red wagon to enjoy the sunshine. With her daughter connected to a monitor, the mother had difficulties taking her out of the wagon. A nurse put down her pie and assisted the mother by untangling the child and positioning the monitor in the most comfortable place for the little girl. The mother said thank you, and the nurse simply smiled and nodded before returning to her vacated pie. The Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center thanks all of their nurses for the dedicated care they give every day.
