School of Public Health commencement



The School of Public Health class of 2001 awaits making its “grand entrance” during the final commencement ceremony of the day, which began at 6:30 p.m. on June 10. Graduates march in to Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by local musician and keyboard specialist Greg Shultz. Mr. Shultz provided the preludes, processionals, and recessionals for all five commencement events on Sunday.
Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, chancellor of the University, addresses the School of Public Health in his new role. The School’s commencment ceremony also marked the final major event presided over by Dr. Hart as dean of the School of Public Health. Amanda Frye, MPH (back to camera), president of the SPH student association, presents Ella Haddad, DrPH, MPH, associate professor of nutrition, with the P. William Dysinger Excellence in Teaching Award for 2001.
Suzette K. Smith, DrPH (right), looks on as Dr. Hart shares some background information before presenting her with the Dean’s Award for a doctoral degree candidate for 2001. Tamara C. Jones, MPH (right), is introduced by Dr. Hart as one of two recipients of the Dean’s Award for a master’s degree candidate for 2001. Linda S. Jin, MPH, was also presented with the Dean’s Award. Susanne B. Montgomery, PhD, MPH, professor of health promotion and education, listens as Dr. Hart reads the words on the plaque naming her as recipient of the Faculty Research Award. Patricia K. Johnston, DrPH, RD (left), associate dean and professor of nutrition, who received the School Alumna of the Year Award, is introduced by Dr. Hart as the University Alumna of the Year for 2001. Dr. Johnston recently announced her retirement. Looking on is B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, LLUAHSC president & CEO.
The Honorable Judith Valles, MA, mayor of the city of San Bernardino, presented the commencement address to the graduates, titled “Renewal and Leadership.” Graduate Cesar A.
