School of Nursing holds dedication service

Nursing students, wearing their white nursing caps for the first time, stand with their nursing lamps of knowledge. The nursing dedication service was held on Sabbath, February 15, 2003, in the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists.

On February 15, 2003, the School of Nursing held a dedication ceremony at University Church of Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda.

Third-year nursing students marched into the church wearing their white nursing caps for the first time and carrying the lamp of knowledge and caring. They marched in accompanied by Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major.

Junior class spiritual vice president Kimmie Copen gave the invocation, which began the service. School of Nursing faculty who were present were each acknowledged with a rose for their hard work and dedication.

Sandy Wyman, RN, director of pastoral care for San Joaquin Hospital, spoke to the students. Her presentation was titled “Stay and Watch With Me.”

Sandy Wyman, RN, director of pastoral care, San Joaquin Hospital, speaks to the students, while Zelne Zamora (left), MSN, RN, instructor of nursing, and Marilyn Herrmann, PhD, RN, associate dean of the undergraduate program, School of Nursing, look on. Ms. Wyman’s presentation was titled “Stay and Watch With Me.”

Ms. Wyman spoke about how important it is for nurses to be empathetic and caring. She emphasized that nurses should not view patients as people who need to be cured, but also as people who need someone to talk to and care for them as individuals.

After her presentation Shavonna Wills, a third-year nursing student, sang a solo, “Just a Prayer Away.” The class officers led the way as Zelne Zamora, MSN, RN, instructor of nursing, School of Nursing, lit the nursing lamp of knowledge.

The burning of the lamp represents the continual seeking of knowledge. It is also symbolic of the light or enlightenment that accompanies knowledge.

Stephanie Barr and Megan Thomas, co-presidents of the junior class, led the nurses in reciting the International Pledge of Nursing. Deleise Wilson, MA, RN, assistant professor of nursing, School of Nursing, ended the service with a prayer of consecration.

After the service, students and families were treated to a small reception.
