School of Dentistry names alumni of the year

Michael Boyko, DDS (left), immediate past president, School of Dentistry Alumni Association, presents the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award to Gerald Denehy, DDS, MS. Dr. Denehy graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1968.

Gerald E. Denehy, DDS, MS, who graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1968, was named distinguished alumnus of the year during the School’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Celebration on February 9, 2003.

Dr. Denehy is operative dentistry graduate program director, University of Iowa College of Dentistry, where he earned his master’s degree in operative dentistry.

He was chosen for the award for his contributions to dentistry and dental science, and service to humanity.

Dr. Denehy is author of a textbook and of more than 100 articles on operative dentistry. His broad clinical experience and direction of research interests are primarily in the area of composite resins and dental bonding.

In addition to full-time teaching responsibilities, Dr. Denehy conducts a private practice devoted primarily to esthetic dentistry.

Dr. Denehy is on the editorial board of several dental publications and serves as a consultant to many dental manufacturers. He has lectured widely both nationally and internationally on topics of composite resins and esthetics.

His teaching honors include multiple teacher of the year awards from dental students, the Gordon Christiansen Lecturer Recognition Award, and the Iowa Dental Educator of the Year Award.

Pearl Zalaski McDonald, who graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1971, was named dental hygiene alumnus of the year during the dental hygienists and assistants luncheon on Friday, February 7.

Ms. McDonald held a full-time clinical teaching position with the School of Dentistry from 1975 to 1981 in the dental hygiene department, giving instruction in the DAU/TEAM program from 1971 to 1975.

Since 1976, she has been involved in part-time clinical instruction in the department and has patiently interacted with students in laboratories and in the clinic every quarter since 1975.

During the late 1970s, Ms. McDonald served as a consultant for the Riverside County Head Start Program, providing dental health education inservice training for staff, students, school nurses, and parents.

In addition, her involvement in dental health education extended into inservice training at a halfway house for Patton State Hospital personnel.

In July, 1993, Ms. McDonald took part in a cultural exchange program with Russian dental educators, lecturing on oral health care during a Volga River Cruise. She also helped a private dental clinic in St. Petersburg set up their first plaque control program. Since her mission trip to Russia, she has continued to work with the Center for Citizen Initiative, providing plaque control seminars for visiting Russian dentists.

She is married to Erwin McDonald, DDS, who graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1961, and has lived in Loma Linda since her graduation from the dental hygiene program.

School of Dentistry establishes Society of Scholars

Throughout the first 50 years, 54 faculty in the School of Dentistry have written chapters in many leading textbooks in a wide variety of disciplines. Twenty-six faculty have authored or edited textbooks as a primary participant, and recently with the incorporation of digital media, most faculty are using a computer as part of their presentations.

The School also has 16 faculty members who have delivered course material via the intranet, distance education, and in CD-ROM format.

To recognize these individuals, the School has formed a Society of Scholars to recognize those individuals with outstanding activity in the area of publications.

To be eligible for membership, an individual must have completed 50 or more publications. During the School’s recent 50th Anniversary Commemorative Celebration, 30 individuals were named charter members of the Society, and others will shortly achieve this distinction. The 30 charter members have authored 3,035 publications—an average of 101 per member.

Four members of the Society have published more than 200 articles: Philip Boyne, DMD, MS, emeritus professor, oral and maxillofacial surgery; James Kettering, PhD, professor, basic science faculty, School of Medicine; Anthony Tjan, DDS, professor emeritus, restorative dentistry; and Mahmoud Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director, advanced education program in endodontics.

In addition, a new historical display on the first floor of Prince Hall highlights these accomplishments. A copy of each textbook written by dental school faculty during the first 50 years is a part of the collection.
