Office of public affairs staff win several awards

Several staff members of the office of public affairs received communication and public relations awards during the month of April.

The marketing department received four awards from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), while the office of University relations received one PRSA award and two Communicator Awards 2002 Print Media competition awards.

The PRSA awards were presented at the PRSA-California Inland Empire Chapter’s annual meeting held at the Sycamore Inn in Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, April 17.

Tammy L. Rotellini, director of public relations, Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, presented the awards recognizing outstanding public relations achievements from the past year.

The department of marketing won the Capella Award for 2001 Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital “Under the Sea” Gala; the Capella Award for NICU Family Handbook for 2001; the Polaris Award for the Spanish Radio Show “Cita Con Su Medico,” the Spanish version of “Ask Your Doctor” radio show; and the Polaris Award for the Healthy Tomorrow newsletter.

Dustin Jones, special projects editor, office of University relations, received the Capella Award for LLU Nurse magazine, the alumni magazine for the School of Nursing.

Mr. Jones also received an Award of Distinction in the Communicator Awards 2002 Print Media competition for his work on LLU Nurse, Fall, 2001 issue. He received a second Award of
Distinction for SIMS Outlook–Millennium Edition, an annual publication focusing on student missions around the world and other Students for International Mission Service projects.

The Communicator Awards 2002 Print Media competition is an international awards competition that recognizes outstanding work in the communications field. Entries are judged by industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. There were 3,660 entries from throughout the United States and several foreign countries in The Communicator Awards 2002 Print Media competition.

The Award of Distinction is awarded for projects that exceed industry standards in communicating a message or idea.

Teaching Learning Center welcomes new assistant director

Irvent R. Torres, PhD, MDiv, MA, has recently joined the Teaching Learning Center (TLC) as the new assistant director.

Dr. Torres received his PhD in education from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he specialized in student development, organizational management, and strategic planning.

He holds a master’s of arts degree in critical and creative thinking in moral education, and a master’s of divinity degree in religious education. His primary interests include developing methodologies for understanding and explaining educational change, policy, and student development.

The Teaching Learning Center is an on-campus educational training and research center aimed at improving the lives and learning of students, staff, and faculty. TLC programs address three areas of academic and professional success—reading, writing, and oral communications—while encouraging students to embrace a healthy, holistic lifestyle. The TLC has served hundreds of students, staff, and faculty after being founded nine years ago by Shirani de Alwis-Chand, EdD, director of the TLC. The Teaching Learning Center is located in room B-112 of West Hall.
