Medicine and Dentistry graduation ceremonies to be held May 26

An expected 285 students from the School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine will receive diplomas during conferring-of- degrees ceremonies scheduled for Sunday, May 26, on the campus mall.

Leading the commencement program will be ceremonies for the School of Medicine, during which an anticipated 150 students will receive diplomas. The conferring-of-degrees ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Leonard L. Bailey, MD

Presenting the commencement address to the School of Medicine students will be Leonard L. Bailey, MD, professor of surgery, School of Medicine, chair, department of surgery, Loma Linda University Medical Center, and surgeon-in-chief, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Bailey earned his bachelor of science degree from Columbia Union College, Takoma Park, Maryland, and his doctor of medicine degree from Loma Linda University in 1969. Subsequent residencies and fellowships in general surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery were completed at LLUMC and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. He is board certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery.

Dr. Bailey developed a vision for infant heart transplantation during his residency program when he saw otherwise perfect babies dying from hypoplastic left-heart syndrome—a congenital heart defect that defied successful reconstructive heart surgery. He performed more than 200 experimental transplantations before his first human transplantation in October, 1984. When an infant known to the world as “Baby Fae” received the heart of a baboon after a human donor was not available, international attention was focused on the potential benefits of transplantation in this age group, as well as on Dr. Bailey and on Loma Linda University Medical Center, where the operation was performed. In November, 1985, Dr. Bailey performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplantation in a newborn baby.

Today, nearly two decades later, transplantation remains a small part of Dr. Bailey’s practice, which currently involves all types of pediatric and infant open-heart surgeries. However, his pioneering work has helped make Loma Linda University and Medical Center not only the world’s leading pediatric heart transplant center but also a respected and recognized entity among major institutions—one that continues to impact the broader world of academic medicine.

Over the years, Dr. Bailey has guest lectured at numerous institutions and conferences—both nationally and internationally—and is an internationally recognized authority on congenital heart surgery and infant heart transplantation. His renown has grown as a result of the many scientific publications to his credit, his membership in professional associations and societies, and the diverse honors and awards he has received.

Speaking to the 135 graduates of the School of Dentistry will be Russell I. Webb, DDS.
Russell Webb, DDS

Dr. Webb earned the BS (1968) and DDS (1978) degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He completed a residency and earned a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1981 from UCLA Hospital and Clinics.

From 1981 to 1991, Dr. Webb was a partner in the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice group of Hicke, Holton, and Webb, DDS, Inc. In 1991, he established the private practice that he currently maintains.

Active in professional dental organizations, Dr. Webb has held membership at the local, national, and international levels. He has also served as chair of committees or as an officer of the Tri-County Dental Society, California Dental Association, Southern California Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the American Dental Association. He is the founder and former president of the Inland Implant Study Club.

Dr. Webb enjoys the distinction of being a medal winner in the Olympic games of 1968 and 1972 (bronze) as a member of the United States water polo team; and in the 1967 Pan American Games (gold and silver) as a member of the American swimming team. He continues to support these sports in part through memberships on committees and commissions that promote their advancement.

Dr. Webb was inducted into the United States Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1984.

Civic minded, Dr. Webb is an active member of his local chamber of commerce, is involved in high school career-day, and serves as a volunteer at a community medical center dental clinic and as a member of local hospital councils and boards.

Dr. Webb is a member of the dentistry national honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon and is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also contributes to his profession as an author and workshop or conference presenter.

During the graduation ceremonies, 89 dental students, 38 dental hygiene students, and eight international dental students will receive diplomas.

A number of awards will be presented during the ceremonies. These will be reported in the next issue of TODAY.
