"They gave me my own toothpaste," said an excited little girl Sunday, April 25, as she and her family left the 14th annual Clinic With a Heart, a day of dental care provided at no cost to those in financial need.

Though patient registration did not begin until 6:30 a.m., individuals began arriving as early at 1:00 a.m. This year, 205 adults and 42 pediatric patients were screened, and $35,342 in dental care was provided at no cost to the patients, the most that has been provided since the event began.

Procedures included 165 radiographs, 85 amalgams, and 92 extractions. Additional procedures included sealants, stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, and composites, among others. Volunteers included 104 faculty and staff, 220 dental and dental hygiene students, and 33 students and faculty from Baldyview Regional Occupational Program Dental Assisting School and Chaffey Junior College dental assisting program.

Najwa Medina, director, campus catering, donated hot chocolate and juice for the patients. Campus engineering donated chairs, tables, and tents. A hearty lunch from Antonious Pizza was provided for the volunteers by the second-year class. "Fourth-year dental students Jason Ferguson, Aurina Poh, and Yolanda Hernandez did an excellent job of organizing the students," says Mary Hartwell, dental clinics manager.

Procter & Gamble (Crest) provided toothbrushes and toothpaste, and funding for T-shirts for the volunteers. Each year a child in immediate need of care is selected, and the company provides funding for more extensive dental work to be completed.
