LLUAHSC nurses win first Caring Spirit Awards
Twenty-one nurses from Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences
Center received nominations for the first Caring Spirit Awards recognizing
nurses of distinction in the Inland Empire. Held at the Mission Inn in
Riverside on October 28, nurses and administrators came out to support
the nominees.
Four LLUAHSC nominees were finalists: Tom Sweeny, RN, from the Diabetes Center;
Bonnie Huiskes, RN, from the International Heart Institute; Beverly Chilson,
RN, from the Behavioral Medicine Center; and Olga Guzman, RN, from case management.
Two finalists, Ms. Huiskes and Ms. Guzman, won their respective categories.
Ms. Huiskes was honored in the outstanding professional achievement for advancement
category. She was thankful for the award honoring what she has always wanted
to do.
“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse,” says Ms. Huiskes. “I
owe a great deal to those who have influenced my professional life.”
She thanked the cardiac team she works with for their dedication, including Thomas
Heywood, MD, and Stephanie Wild, administrative director for advanced practice
nursing, who nominated her for the award.
Ms. Guzman won the Caring Spirit Award for excellence in advocacy for patients.
She was appreciative of the award acknowledging the daily battle to balance the
need of reimbursement with patient care. Keith Anderson, RN, nominated Ms. Guzman
because “she makes sure that patients are absolutely ready to leave, and
when they do leave, that they have everything they need.”
The nominees from
LLUAHSC were: Susy Peverini, RN; Wendy Ready, RN; Char Immoto, RN; Olga Guzman,
RN; Claudia Guillaume, RN; Carol Grall, RN; Patricia Crudup, RN; Terri Bonilla,

Good Samaritan Awards presented at employee forum
The Good Samaritan Excellence in Staff Service Awards were presented
for the second time at the third quarter employee forums in October.
The employees chosen from nominations in the I CARE card programs, supervisor
observation, and administration observation, all received an ID card
holder fashioned after a medal with the imprint of the Good Samaritan
sculpture, a letter of commendation from the president placed in their
files, and a monetary reward. A staff member is eligible to win a Good
Samaritan Award once during their career at LLUMC. Each award was presented
by B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, president and CEO of LLUAHSC.
The winners: Gloria Almonte, medical records, Behavioral Medicine Center; Shayne
Bigelow-Price, staff development; Lars Jorgensen, information systems; Rosalie
Ann Morvai, surgical/trauma ICU; Barbara Ninan, RN, clinical director, Total
Birth Care Center; Jenae Pruett, medical records, Behavioral Medicine Center;
Wendy Ready, RN, family care services; Saul Silva, chaplain’s department;
Pedrito Tongpo, recovery room; and Lily Choi Young, PT, supervisor for the physical
therapy department. Also, in an unfortunate oversight a name was left out of
last quarter’s Good Samaritan winners—Janette Whittaker-Allen, RN,
transplant coordinator with the cardiac transplant team, won the award in the
July employee forums while she was away on vacation.
