The newest chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma was organized at Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy on November 9, 2003.

During the evening ceremony, 15 individuals were initiated in the Gamma Beta chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma.

Participating in the initiation celebration was Mary L. Euler, PharmD, RPh, executive director of Phi Lambda Sigma. Dr. Euler is assistant dean and clinical assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy, University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Phi Lambda Sigma was founded in 1965 to honor leadership, according to Dr. Euler. “Phi Lambda Sigma is the only national pharmacy leadership society,” she says.

“The primary objective of this honor society is to promote advancement in the pharmaceutical sciences through encouragement and recognition in superior leadership.”

Members in the society are selected by peer recognition, says Avis J. Ericson, PharmD, executive associate dean, LLU School of Pharmacy.

“No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers,” Dr. Ericson states. “For a student to be eligible for membership, he or she must be of high moral and ethical character, have successfully completed at least one professional year in a recognized pharmacy program, demonstrated exceptional leadership, and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50 on a 4 point scale.”

Also installed during the ceremony were chapter officers. Installed as president was Veda Roshan. Other officers installed included Warren Chae, vice president; Ferchie De la Rosa, secretary/treasurer; and Cherin Chung, delegate. All are members of the School of Pharmacy class of 2006. Faculty advisor to the society is Barry Bleidt, PhD, PharmD, associate to the dean for student and professional affairs.
