Respiratory therapy students receive scholarships

The Louisa M. Jezerinac Cardiopulmonary Scholarship was awarded to Sophea Johansen (third from right) and Amalia Moreno (fifth from right), senior respiratory therapy students in the School of Allied Health Professions. The awards were presented during a luncheon on Friday, October 18, by Peter Jezerinac. Mr. Jezerinac set up the scholarship in memory of his wife who graduated from LLU’s respiratory therapy program. More than $30,000 has been distributed to respiratory therapy students through the scholarship since its establishment nine years ago. It is awarded each year to a student who is recognized as a compassionate caregiver. Respiratory therapy students attending the luncheon are (front row from left) Michael Cho, Kimberly Carlile (back row from left), Justin Love, Shawna Moody, Michael Tran, Harold Rompas, Ms. Moreno, Hugo Pena, Ms. Johansen, Angela Iskandar, and Delia Lujan.

SAHP donors receive recognition and thanks

Paige Shaughnessy, PhD, associate professor, speech-language pathology and audiology, speaks at the School of Allied Health Professions donor reception.

A donor recognition dinner was held Monday, November 4, to honor individuals who have contributed to the School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) during the past year.

Held in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center, the dinner provided donors a chance to interact with SAHP faculty, bid farewell to Joyce W. Hopp, PhD, MPH, who is retiring as dean of the school in December, and to meet incoming dean Craig R. Jackson, JD, MSW, currently an associate professor in the Graduate School.

After the meal, Dr. Hopp shared highlights of international service that SAHP faculty have participated in recently. One of these programs, a joint bachelor’s degree from Loma Linda University and the Humanitec Rehabilitation College (HRC) in Yokkaichi City, Japan, was presented by Paige S. Shaughnessy, PhD, associate professor in the department of speech-language pathology and audiology. Dr. Shaughnessy gave a history on how the partnership evolved and details on the program itself.

Following dinner, Renate Krause, PhD (left), director of SAHP development, speaks with Akira Tusima, a faculty member at Humanitec Rehabilitation College who is currently studying at LLU.

“The partnership between Loma Linda University and Humanitec Rehabilitation College is attractive to the students as it facilitates a smooth transition into a master’s program,” relates Dr. Shaughnessy.

Another benefit to students is the chance to study in the United States. Due to the unique nature of the partnership, the HRC students are required to spend one quarter at Loma Linda University.

Akira Tusima, head of physical therapy faculty at HRC, is one of 17 students spending fall, 2002, quarter on the Loma Linda campus. Mr. Tusima joined Dr. Shaughnessy during the dinner to share his personal comments on the program.

Following the presentation, Renate Krause, PhD, director of advancement for the School of Allied Health Professions, concluded the evening by thanking all the donors for their contribution to the school. “We greatly appreciate the partnership you have joined in with us,” she commented.
