Loma Linda University hosts fifth annual MITHS program
 |
The fifth annual MITHS (Minority Introduction to Health Sciences) program
was held from June 29 to July 17. Sixteen high school juniors arrived
from all over the country: four from Pine Forge Academy, Pine Forge,
Pennsylvania; two from Greater Atlanta Adventist Academy, Atlanta, Georgia;
and one each from Andrews Academy, Berrien Springs, Michigan; Long Reach
High School, Columbia, Maryland; Miami Union Academy, Miami, Florida;
Greater Miami Academy, Miami, Florida; Oakwood Academy, Huntsville, Alabama;
Takoma Academy, Takoma Park, Maryland; Valley Grande Academy, Weslaco,
Texas; and Rio Lindo Academy, Healdsburg, California.
The students were immersed in the culture and classes on the Loma Linda University
campus. The classes included pre-calculus math, anatomy and physiology, etiquette,
as well as reading, writing, and study skills enhancement courses at the LLU
Teaching Learning Center. There were also spiritual events (Friday night vespers,
Sabbath worship), and social events (trips to Disneyland and Universal Studios).
A special highlight was a tour of Loma Linda University Medical Center given
by H. Roger Hadley, MD, dean of the School of Medicine.
The students were exposed to all of the health-science career programs available
at LLU by the deans from six of the seven professional schools and the Faculty
of Religion. The deans met with the students at specially arranged individual
meetings throughout the three weeks.
The MITHS program, which is sponsored by Black Alumni of Loma Linda and La Sierra
Universities (BALL), was created to expose students to all of the health - science
career programs available at LLU.
Much thanks goes to the BALL executive committee, the MITHS committee, the MITHS
teachers, the school deans, and administration of LLU, and many others on the
Loma Linda University campus for their part in helping with another successful
MITHS program.
