John Richard Hamilton

Memorial services for Drayson Center director John Richard (Dickie) Hamilton were held Wednesday, October 4, at the Kansas Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church in Riverside.

Mr. Hamilton, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Monday evening, September 25, was the only child of John and Autie Hamilton.

Born March 23, 1944, in Los Angeles, Mr. Hamilton completed his high school years at La Sierra Academy, Riverside, graduating in 1962. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Pacific Union College, Angwin, in 1966, Mr. Hamilton decided to devote his life in service to young people.

Mr. Hamilton's career began in 1968 as a physical education instructor and varsity sports coach for La Sierra Academy. In 1971, he accepted a position as physical education instructor and director of the intramural program for Walla Walla College, College Place, Washington.

The following year, Mr. Hamilton received an invitation from the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to become associate youth leader. He held this position until 1977 when he became associate and subsequently director of the youth department of the Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

In 1987, Mr. Hamilton resumed teaching, serving as a physical education and religion instructor at Fresno Academy. He returned to the Southeastern California Conference in 1987 to become vice principal and basketball coach at La Sierra Academy. This was interrupted in 1993 when the Central California Conference invited Mr. Hamilton to come back to the area and serve as principal of Mountain View Academy.

In 1995, Mr. Hamilton returned to Southern California where he was asked to incorporate his administrative, educational, and recreational skills to become director of Loma Linda University Drayson Center.

Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Melodee, and his children, Nalo Hamilton, Nika Hamilton, Nina Hamilton, Rebekah Ulibarri, and Neal Gonet.

A fund honoring Mr. Hamilton has been established at La Sierra Academy. Individuals wishing to contribute or learn more about the fund may call La Sierra Academy at (909) 351-1445. The Home Depot donates painting supplies to SAC Health System

Home Depot  painter

Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH (right), president of SAC Health System, thanks The Home Depot representative Bill Reffner (second from right) for their help obtaining necessary items to paint the SAC-Norton clinic. Looking on (continuing, third from right) are Nancy Young, SAC clinic administrator; Jim Vallentine, commercial sales representative, The Glidden Company; and Micah Taylor, consumer sales representative, The Glidden Company.

A painter from LLU campus engineering uses a pressure washer, on-loan from The Home Depot, to clean the side of SAC-Norton clinic in San Bernardino.

It all began with a letter written by Social Action Community (SAC) Health System clinic administrator Nancy S. Young to The Home Depot, located on Hospitality Lane in San Bernardino.

Ms. Young's request landed on the desk of local store manager Peter Malis, who took immediate action.

Mr. Malis contacted the sales representatives from both the Glidden Company and Behr Paints. He also involved his store's own commercial paint sales representative, Bill Reffner, in helping to organize the project.

The results of his efforts have set into motion the transformation process that only a good paint job can provide.

The Glidden Company and Behr Paints agreed to donate all of the paint needed to meet the request of Ms. Young. The Home Depot is providing all additional paint supplies--rollers, brushes, plastic, masking tape, etc.--required to complete the task. In addition, the store is loaning a professional pressure washer and spray rig.

"The Home Depot gives back to the community whenever it can," says Bill Reffner. "For instance, we're currently involved with the Sheriff's Rodeo at the Orange Show [San Bernardino], where we have a booth."

Those staffing The Home Depot booth will show the children attending the Sheriff's Rodeo how to do some basic wiring, plumbing, patching holes in the wall, and painting.

The Glidden Company also takes part in a number of community projects, including one in Redlands.

"We're involved with a program called 'Colorful Classrooms,'" says Jim Valentine, commercial sales representative for The Glidden Company. "We're providing the paint and labor for one of the classrooms at Smelly Elementary in Redlands."

Some of the classrooms had not been painted for some time. At the request of teachers from other rooms, The Glidden Company agreed to donate additional paint to "spruce up" their rooms too.

"SAC-Norton is coming up on its 5-year anniversary, serving an average of nearly 40,000 patients a year," comments Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, dean of the LLU School of Public Health and president of SAC Health System. "This special collaboration is allowing us to catch up with some deferred maintenance."
