Thursday, October 10, 2002 TODAY Loma Linda University Faculty of Religion news Bioethics Grand Rounds focuses on cancer genetics issues
Issues in cancer genetics is the topic of the next bioethics grand rounds scheduled to be held Wednesday, October 9, 2002. Jeffrey N. Weitzel, MD, director, clinical cancer genetics program, City of Hope National Medical Center, and division of molecular medicine, Beckman Research Institute, Duarte, California, will present "Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Cancer Genetics." The grand rounds will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in the A-level amphitheater, Loma Linda University Medical Center. Course objectives of the grand rounds are: to recognize ethical, legal, and social issues relevant to hereditary cancer risk assessment and genetic testing; apply bioethical principles to appropriately address challenges in cancer genetic counseling; identify emerging federal and state legislation protecting against genetic discrimination; and to understand the roles of informed consent and certificates of confidentiality in clinical and research based genetic testing. The grand rounds, presented by the Center for Christian Bioethics and the Center for Spiritual Life & Wholeness, is designated by the School of Medicine for continuing medical education activity for one hour in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. Loma Linda University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing education for physicians.
