Loma Linda University students attend Fall Week of Devotion

The Fall Week of Devotion for Loma Linda University was held October 7 to 11, 2002, with featured speaker Randy Roberts, MDiv, senior pastor of the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda.

Held in the University Church, chapels for the Week of Devotion began each day with song service, opening prayer and remarks, and a special music by University students. Faculty participating in various portions of the programs included Lisa M. Beardsley, PhD, MPH, vice chancellor for academic affairs; Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, chancellor; Helen E. King, PhD, RN, dean, School of Nursing; Ralph W. Perrin, DrPH, dean of student affairs; Verlon Strauss, CPA, vice chancellor for financial affairs; Terry R. Swenson, MDiv, campus chaplain; and Gerald R. Winslow, PhD, special assistant to the chancellor and dean, Faculty of Religion.

The theme for the week was "What Jesus Might Say to Students." Each day, Dr. Roberts addressed what Jesus might say to students who experience different emotions, such as the feelings of being lost, lonely, or guilty. He also addressed what Jesus might say to students at the bottom of the class, as well as those who are hard-working.

Dr. Roberts recognized that student life can often seem like an endless round of trying to be good enough to belong. He pointed out that students are aiming for a GPA, test scores, or board results that are good enough for success.

"As students, it's easy to translate that message from the academia life to the spiritual life," Dr. Roberts shares. "But he who humbles himself will be exalted.

"When we kneel in humility, the blowing of the Spirit sweeps us up in its power, borne into the loving presence of God," Dr. Roberts said during Wednesday's chapel service. "The way up is down, and the way down is to say ‘God, be merciful to me.'"
