Patients from Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital gave
a warm welcome to the Loma Linda Department of Public Safety Fire and
Rescue division personnel who visited on October 7 to promote fire safety.
Every year during the week of October 9, fire departments across the country
promote fire prevention week in memory of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
“It provides us a chance to talk with parents about home fire safety,” says
Gerald Patterson, a fire prevention inspector for the City of Loma Linda. As
part of the annual visit to Children’s Hospital, firefighters set up a
miniature one-sided house with wooden flame targets. With the help of the child
life department, patients come outside the hospital and get a chance to spray
fire hoses with a firefighter to knock the targets down.
In addition to the fire hose activity, several firefighters and Sparky, the fire
dog mascot, visit children on the units. The firefighters hand out red fire hats
and talk with the kids about keeping safe when it comes to fire.
This year’s theme for the week was a simple message: “When fire strikes,
get out! Stay out!”
Here are some safety tips to help keep you safe at home:
• install a smoke alarm on every floor of your home;
• test the alarms once a month;
• replace batteries at least once each year;
• plan an escape route out of your house; and
• know two ways out of every room.
