Loma Linda University Medical Center language services participated in its very first video interpreting session March 24, 2008. A member of the health care team from urgent care on the East Campus placed a video call to language services at LLUMC to request a Spanish interpreter. A few moments later, Spanish interpreter Katya Campos, sitting in front of her videoconference unit in the language services office in the Medical Center, interpreted for the urgent care patient. According to Helen Jenks, manager of LLUMC language services, “The session lasted 15 minutes, but it could have taken one and a half hours if we had to take the shuttle to urgent care and back. We are utilizing the telemedicine equipment stationed in urgent care already.” As part of the LLU telehealth initiative, a centralized video data center is now operational, permitting videoconference opportunities to support administration, clinical services, and education.
