Loma Linda University Medical Center news

German contract awarded to orthopaedics department

Tom Donaldson, MD, director of the Joint Replacement Center at the orthopaedic department of Loma Linda University Medical Center, announced that a German ceramic manufacturer, CeramTecAG, had awarded a $75,000 contract in July for hip joint studies at LLUMC. This is the first-phase study for a new type of ceramic hip and if successful will lead to additional contracts. Ceramic hip joints have been used routinely by Dr. Donaldson for the selected, high-activity patients coming to LLUMC. The orthopaedic research team led by professor Ian Clarke, PhD, director of the Implant Tribology Lab (East Campus LLUMC), has previously studied ceramic hip joints from French and Japanese manufacturers. Dr. Clarke noted that this German contract was excellent recognition for the success of the orthopaedic mission, as with LLUMC is now being identified as a world leader in ceramic hip research.
