Innerweave: The Wholeness Story
By Wil Alexander, PhD, Professor of family medicine, School of Medicine
Once upon a time when I was a pastor, I was accosted by an irate member who was really upset because I had talked about sin in my sermon for that day. Later I thought about a book I had read titled What Ever Happened to Sin? Below is the classic list of the Seven Deadly Sins. I am curious what is happening in other lives as well as mine:
Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise.
Envy is the desire for other’s traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as wrath.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual.
Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.
Living with this list makes one very grateful for grace and forgiveness and what probation is left.
