Eighteen LLU students who participated in the 2005 Challenged Athletes Foundation San Diego triathlon also helped raise money for disabled athletes in Brazil. The money was used to buy eight specialized wheelchairs for Brazilian athletes associated with the Team PossAbilities. Six chairs are basketball wheelchairs, and two are racing wheelchairs.

The racing chairs are for Ronilson dos Santos and Fernando Aranha, two disabled athletes from Brazil who are part of Team PossAbilities. Mr. Santos, 37, lost his right leg to bone cancer and is a top racer in Brazil, winning the Rio de Janeiro race this year. Polio stole the use of his legs from Mr. Aranha, 28, who has finished in the top 15 in the New York marathon and the top 10 in the Chicago marathon in 2004.

The Brazilian Team PossAbilities visited LLU’s Drayson Center and Fabio Maia and Haun Nguyen from Team PossAbilities to pick up the equipment August 17. Mr. Santos and Mr. Aranha will be using their new chairs to race for Team PossAbilities later this month.
