As the 2014– 2016 president of Gamma Alpha, I am honored to be part of an organization whose members are involved in “advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.” This is STTI’s mission, and I am committed to working with our Gamma Alpha members to further that mission and the values of STTI: love, courage, and honor. In keeping with STTI’s mission and values, the theme for my presidency is “Expanding Limits: Increasing Gamma Alpha’s Local, Regional & Global Presence.”
STTI has asserted its global presence by electing its first president from outside North America, Hester Klopper, whose call to action is to “Serve Locally, Transform Regionally, Lead Globally.” In addition, STTI has been awarded special consultative status by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (U.N.), which gives STTI and nursing a voice at the U.N. on issues and processes related to improving world health. In keeping with this, President Klopper challenged members and chapters to “engage in activities that will assist in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by 2015.” http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/
Gamma Alpha seeks to rise to this challenge by supporting Millennium Development Goal 7c (Ensure Environmental Sustainability—safe drinking water) by participating in the H2Omicron Delta fundraising initiative through water.org.
STTI President Klopper also encourages us to “reach out to chapters across STTI networks and create collaborative initiatives.” I believe Gamma Alpha’s partnership with fellow Southern California STTI chapters for the annual Odyssey Conference is testimony of this collaboration. This conference is held each year in the fall, I hope to see you there!
Gamma Alpha has been the recipient of two Chapter Key Awards as a result of excellence in chapter-related activities that meet four categories of involvement: leadership development, membership engagement, chapter operations, and recruitment & publicity. We strive to excel in each of these categories and we seek your input in helping us to maintain and continue to achieve this award.
I invite you to contact me to share your thoughts and comments. Together we will continue to build an even stronger chapter by expanding our limits and increasing our presence.
