Anne Petersen, PhD, MS, MPH
Assistant Professor, Nursing - Graduate
School of Nursing

Dr. Petersen recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California San Francisco's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. Her strong interest in health promotion and women’s empowerment, and commitment to addressing global health needs has compelled her to consider how she can contribute to efforts aimed at averting the projected and emerging tobacco epidemic in low- and middle-income countries. She is currently engaged in an ongoing collaboration with nursing colleagues at Hawassa University in Ethiopia, and recently conducted an exploratory study on secondhand smoke (SHS) and cooking fire smoke exposure among women and children in Aleta Wondo, Ethiopia. Her current research program is addressing two foci areas. First, she is continuing to exploring the interface of secondhand tobacco smoke and cooking fire smoke exposure. Knowledge gained from this work can inform tobacco control prevention policies and the development of tailored behavioral interventions to reduce the potential disease burden associated with both types of smoke exposures. Second, she is collaborating with a nurse-led project in Eastern Europe focused on enhancing nurses’ competency in tobacco control and understanding barriers to quitting among nurses who smoke. Her long-term goals are to build a program of research aimed at the global promotion of smoke free homes (from SHS and cooking fire smoke) and the empowerment of nurses, both here in the U.S. and globally, in the areas of non-communicable disease and tobacco-dependence prevention and treatment.
