Lena T. Pond Scholarship ( 6/1989 )
The Lena T. Pond waq born in Hartford City, Indiana on April 26, 1984. She came to Riverside in 1912 at the age of 18. She took her nurses training and graduated as a registered nurse from Riverside City Hospital at the corner of 12th & Walnut (now Brockton) Streets. She later became supervisor of the maternity wardat Riverside Community Hospital. She also served as surgical assistant at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino. She was the last living charter member of the Nightingale Club which she helped organize in 1918, during the flu epidemic. She was a charter member of the Riverside Community Hospital Tree, Branch #9, an active participant in Riverside Community Hospital Woman''''s Auxillary A Pink Lady Service, and the Riverside Woman''''s Club. These records show how very interested she was in helping the community through nursing in her earlier life and also later financially later in life. Her will and desire is to continue these efforts to help young people to become interested in the nursing profession and to further benefit the Riverside community.
