In this dissertation research project, we synthesized cyanostilbenes using the Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction and characterized them with GC/MS and TLC analyses. We then evaluated the cyanostilbenes for in vitro antitumor activity. We demonstrated that cyanostilbenes with anti-tumor activity were able to inhibit the growth of estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer cells in part by arresting cell cycle progression and inhibiting tubulin polymerization in these cells. |
