“Sickness calls forth stories,” and “Narrative is a magnet and a bridge, attracting and uniting diverse fields of human learning. . . Like narrative acts, clinical practice requires the engagement of one person with another person and realizes that authentic engagement is transformative for all participants. Narrative competence permits caregivers to fathom what their patients go through, to attain that illuminated grasp of another’s experience that provides them with diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic direction” (Charon 11).
