This year I will apply team-based learning concepts to the class along with opportunities for students to access information on Blackboard. In anticipation of significant changes in licensure for Marriage & Family Therapists as well as the probably licensure of Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, we will incorporate information about the recovery model into this class. I also teach the counseling version of this class - COUN 556.

We use role play, video demonstration, and writing to help students develop skills in this very important approach.
1/2009 - 3/2009 MFAM 638 Family Therapy and Chemical Abuse
The final is based upon a video the students watch in the last class meeting. Students are asked to create a comprehensive, integrated treatment plan addressing the issues in the video from an addictions treatment perspective.

Used vignettes to help students associate "faces" with diagnoses. Used Blackboard to conduct weekly, online quizzes.

In addition to an overview of most common substances therapists are likely to encounter in their clinical practices, course focuses on helping professionals develop strategies for motivating, engaging, retaining, and connecting substance abusers and their families with effective treatment services.

This course is taken by students entering the masters program in the Department of Counseling & Family Sciences. Over the course of a week-long intensive, students receive information about the field of marriage & family therapy as well as counseling. In addition, students get the opportunity to develop and practice counseling behaviors daily.

This is a week-long intensive class in which students have the opportunity to practice leading and participating in groups. I function as a supervisor during this class, which means I observe the students as they co-facilitate and support them if they need help.

MFAM 637 Case Presentation Seminar


During this final quarter of case class, students make a formal two-hour presentation to a panel comprised of faculty members and clinical supervisors. The presentation focuses on the student''''s application of a specific theory to work with a family or couple.
