9/2005 - 12/2007 MFTH 538 Introduction to Relational Practice This course examines relational practice through observation and team involvement with on-going cases. The course emphasizes the current state of the marriage and family therapy field regarding case conceptualization and clinical skills and techniques using systems/relational approaches. Students are encouraged to consider their professional identities as MFTS and the theoretical, practical, and ethical issues involved when working from a systems/relational perspective.  
I use live observation of an on-going marital/family therapy case conducted by the instructor, followed by class discussion. Students also read original sources from the founders of major family therapy models and discuss current issues such as diagnoese from a systems perspective and the larger cultural context.
9/2005 - 12/2013 MFTH 668 Qualitative Research Practicum This course gives students the opportunity to continue to develop the skills for conducting and reporting qualitative research begun in MFTH 604. Students are expected to engage a research project with particular emphasis on analysis and manuscript preparation

1/2005 - 4/2014 MFTH 604 Advanced Qualitative Research 4 units winter quarter This is the second course in a sequence designed to prepare doctoral students to conduct and evaluate research in marital and family therapy and family studies. This course introduces students to a social constructionist critique of research. Students learn to think broadly about research paradigms and design, considering questions such as the researcher’s role and relationship to the research process, objectivity, reflexivity, credibility, and the construction of knowledge. Students will develop the inductive, interpretive, and analytic skills necessary for phenomenological inquiry and the development of grounded theory and learn how to apply these to topics important to the family and clinical fields.

1/2005 - 12/2013 MFTH 634 Doctoral Practicum in Marital and Family Therapy 2 units fall quarter
This is one quarter of a three-quarter practicum series for doctoral students in marital and family therapy. Throughout the practicum series students learn a positive, strengths-based framework to MFT and develop, evaluate, and refine competencies in systems/relational practice. Competnecies for focus are in the areas of case conceptualization, managing clinical sessions, intervention skills, self-reflexivity, and professionalism. The primary focus of this quarter is the gender, cultural, and political aspects of practice. 2 units winter and spring quarters.
3/2001 - 9/2010 MFAM 545 Gender Perspectives in Family Therapy 2 units spring (spring) and 2 units summer (Canada campus) This course examines the role and significance of gender in the clinical conceptualization of relationship functioning and in the practice of marital and family therapy and school counseling. Attention is given toward understanding gender differences within social contexts. How to apply course concepts in prpactice settings is a major focus.

This course provides a meta-perspective for the analysis and development of the systemic/relational theories guiding the practice of marital and family therapy. Students will learn to contextualize and deconstruct the philosophical, religious, poliltical, sociological, and ecosystemic notitions that have influenced the field and to develop skills that will prepare them to contribute to the on-going critique and development of MFT theory. The course will focus on how knowledge is constructed, with special emphasis on a relational perspective of the "self" and the consequent implications for research and practice. 4 units.

9/2012 - 12/2013 MFTH 607. Scholarly Skills (1 unit)
This course orients Counseling and Family Sciences doctoral students with use of bibliographic search engines and databases to write critical literature reviews. The course will provide instruction on differential use of search terms unique to each specific bibliographic database such as PubMed, PsychInfo, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, and others.  The course will also provide an introduction to use of EndNote, a bibliographic software program that will allow you to begin developing your own bibliographic database for class projects, qualifying exams, research papers, DMFT projects, and dissertations. Loma Linda University has purchased a site license for all students so you may download the software on your laptops.  Students will also learn how to organize a scholarly review paper using APA format and develop appropriate and effective style for professional writing.
3/2012 - 6/2014 MFAM 604  Social Context of Clinical Practice.  Social inequalities result in unfairness, health disparities, assaults to personal dignity; and family stress. This course focuses on how one’s position with social hierarchies such as gender, social economic status, race, and sexual orientation affect psychological and relational health. Students learn how family therapists and counselors address these social contextual factors as part of a recovery-based approach that empowers people within their relationships and social systems.

9/2008 - 12/2008 MFTH 564 Social Context of Health This is an introductory course that provides a sociological overview of the mental and physical health care system in the United States. Attention will be focused on the social contextual and structural factors that give rise to access and treatment within the health care system. Topics covered include medical family therapy and health care system, history of medical institutions in the U.S., theoretical perspectives on health and illness, examination of health care industry, social inequality in health and illness, culture and health, mental health consequences of mental illness to individuals, families and society and mental health over the life course. Implications for practice are emphasized.
