The Acute Care Management Affiliation is designed to enable the student to: Gain participation experience in health information management functions, and in general areas of health information management responsibility. Make the transition from theory to practice as a professional health information administrator, under the close supervision of experienced practitioners. Observe and demonstrate management functions that include problem identification, alternate solutions, decision-making, and resolution. Observe working relationships of health information managers, department staff, facility administration, and medical staff. Demonstrate ability to apply management principles to situations encountered in the department/organization. Maintain professionalism in actions, appearance, and manner. Gain experience in establishing appropriate interpersonal relationships in the professional environment. Complete special projects related to the practice of departmental administration.

The primary objectives of the Junior Practicum are to introduce the student to the functions of a health information department as well as the operation of the entire facility. It is important for the student to observe how the health information department provides vital information throughout the acute care facility and to understand the roles and responsibilities of a health information department director.
