By mid-day, January 12, the news breaking from Haiti showed a devastated country with a populace overwhelmed with shock, fright, and grief from the massive 7.0 earthquake. As Loma Linda University investigated how to best help the people of Haiti, including organizing a group of doctors and staff to provide health and surgical services, the students of the School of Pharmacy took another valuable action - a quick collection of funds.
Immediately after the earthquake of January 12, several pharmacy students organized a campaign to aid in the Haitian relief efforts. Deciding the best course for immediate help was in the way of monetary relief, within one week students from the School of Pharmacy raised a total of $1,125. “This is amazing for what our students are doing to aid in the relief effort for Haiti, and we in the School of Pharmacy applaud the generosity of our students,” states Linda Williams, MS, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs & Admissions.
Loma Linda University has established a fund to facilitate donations for use specifically at the Adventist hospital in Port-au-Prince, Hopital Adventiste d'Haiti. The hospital is in need of many resources in order to function aroung-the-clock during this critical period and for the months and years to come.
