Pharmacy Practice Reisdency Program General Information

Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) - Pediatrics

Loma LInda University PGY2 Pediatrics Pharmacy Residency Program is currently in the pre-candidate status within the accreditation process by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). PGY2 Pediatrics resident will develop the knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary to become an advanced pharmaceutical care practitioner in the area of pediatrics. The program also has a focus on medication safety for the Children’s Hospital. It is structured to suit the individual needs of the resident and provide an environment of quality training in pharmaceutical care and medication safety. PGY2 Pediatrics program offers the opportunity to experience a variety of pediatric settings. Rotations include General Pediatrics, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, Pulmonary, Neurology, Pharmacy QA, Cardiac ICU, Gastroenterology and others. Linda University is dedicated to the necessary training of competent, clinical pharmacists in specialized areas.

PEDIATRICS RESIDENCY GOALS

• Become proficient in the pharmacologic management of the pediatric patient
• Function as a productive member of a multi-disciplinary pediatric team
• Provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care
• Provide medication safety component in management
• Improve written and verbal communication skills
• Acquire adequate knowledge and skills that will asisst in becoming an effective pediatric pharmacist
• Attain Board Certification in Pediatric Pharmacy upon completion of the program

RESIDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participate in patient care rounds, monitor patients and assess the appropriateness of drug therapy
• Provide drug information to patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals
• Participate in Children's Hospital Medication Safety Taskforce and other meetings involving Medication Safety/Quality Assurance
• Develop guidelines and provide education to health care professionals and students
• Precept pharmacy students and/or PGY1 residents
• Deliver didactic instruction, small group facilitation
• Complete research project focused on medication safety

TEACHING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Residents enrolled into the PGY1 Program will participate in the Teaching Certificate Program. The goal of the program is to provide participants the experience and guidance necessary to understand and apply current educational issues in pharmacy education. In order to earn the certificate, each participant must meet the following requirements:

1. Attendance at teaching seminars (20 hours)
2. Teaching experience (3 hrs of lecture and 10 hrs of case conference)
3. Development of Teaching Dossier
4. Other academic-related activities
