Pharmacy Practice Residency Program General Information

Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) - Pharmacy Administration

The 12-month PGY2 Pharmacy Administration Residency Program is designed to provide a resident with educational and administrative experiences related to safe medication use, continuous quality improvement and regulatory compliance in an acute care teaching hospital and a variety of its affiliated facilities. The goal of our program is to prepare the resident to become proficient in analyzing the medication use system and reported events, developing appropriate actions and educational tools for error prevention and process improvement. The program provides multidisciplinary opportunities for applying and enhancing leadership, time management, critical thinking, computer and presentation skills.

PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION RESIDENT ACTIVITIES

• Attend and participate in periodic meetings such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and sub-committees
• Participate in developing and implementing department and institutional policies, procedures, guidelines, competencies, and performance improvement strategies
• Contribute to clinical and administrative activities, such as collecting, analyzing and presenting data for Adverse Drug Events, gap analysis, turnaround time studies, Drug Utilization Evaluations, Root Cause Analysis, and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis
• Learn about regulatory, accrediting, and patient safety organizations such as AHRQ, CBOP, CDPH, CMS, FDA, ISMP and others
• Complete a formal research project to be presented at a conference
• Serve as a preceptor to PharmD students and PGY1 residents
• Enhance time management, organizational, and management skills to fulfill both clinical and academic practice requirements
• Prepare and deliver effective lectures to pharmacy students and other healthcare professionals

TEACHING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Residents enrolled into the program will be given the option to be included in the Teaching Certificate Program.  The goal of the program is to provide participants the experience and guidance necessary to understand and apply current educational issues in pharmacy education.  Ultimately, the program will build a foundation that incorporates successful learning-centered teaching methods.  In order to earn the certificate, each participant must meet the following requirements:

1. Attendance at teaching seminars
2. Teaching experience (3 hrs of lecture and 10 hrs of case conference)
3. Development of Teaching Dossier
4. Other academic-related activities
