Experiential Learning

The practicum portion of the program allows students the opportunity to integrate academic studies with workplace experience. During this time, they will develop valuable skills required for administrative positions through hands-on work experience, special project coordination, administrative interaction and other assignments that build management skills.

With over 40 practicum sites, students are able to choose from a wide variety of specializations within the field of health care administration or health care policy. For students who are unsure about the areas which they wish to specialize, this practicum program helps to guide them through the decision making process. The practicum course has an instructor in charge of linking the students to practicum sites. The instructor is also actively involved in guiding and mentoring each student throughout the practicum experience.

MBA program

The Health Administration Practicum is designed for graduate students enrolled in the Master of Business Administration in Healthcare (MBA in Healthcare) program at Loma Linda University School of Public Health (LLU SPH). The program integrates academic studies with workplace experience over a period of up to two years. The 800 hour practicum gives the students the opportunity to observe and be involved with management in various departments within healthcare.

No practicum site is identical to another, but each site provides the opportunity to gain general management and leadership skills, while also providing the student an accurate picture of what a position in that specific field would be like. Students will work under the supervision of experienced professionals to optimize the mentoring offered by the placement site. Students typically work 10 to 20 hours per week at the practicum site until they complete the required hours.

Medical/Dental Students

This program gives medical students the opportunity to include a management component to their medical training. The practicum portion follows the same format as the MBA practicum program but with a 400 hour requirement to fit the one year, condensed program.
