About the Summit

Design for healthy communities brings geographic analysis into urban and suburban design processes that seek to promote human health. The summit provides a forum to exchange ideas on environmental factors that affect our health and to discuss new community planning approaches that incorporate health considerations.

A healthy community design provides a framework for professionals to leverage geospatial thinking and health information, resulting in designs that more closely follow naturally healthy systems. This approach benefits a population's health and well-being and leads toward a more synergistic health landscape.

LLU's Health Geoinformatics Laboratory

Loma Linda University School of Public Health is a premier provider of health geoinformatics training and education for the current and future public health workforce in the United States. The GIS department continues the School's efforts to enhance geoinformatics capacity in countries with developing economies and advance fully capable and interoperable information systems in the many organizations that participate in public health with judicious use of geoinformatics technology. The health geoinformatics section is supported by a state-of-the-art education/training and research facility fully equipped with professional GIS, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and remote sensing technologies. The lab is located within the Centennial Complex building giving students, faculty, and staff easy access to the extensive geo-technology resources available to all Loma Linda University schools. The spacious facility is equipped with two-twenty seat computer labs in rooms 3110 (east lab) and 3102 (west GIS lab) separated by a support room 3104. There is no contiguity to utilize the two labs as a 40-seat lab. The computer workstations are supported by peripherals such as a plotter, GPS devices, printers, scanner, and others.

Summit Mission

Summit Vision

The Healthy Communities by Design will serve as the premier summit for national and international community collaboration, information exchange, and source of expert speakers on the topic of health, the built environment, and GIS technology. This summit will be a vital component of the LLU Public Health conference series specifically designed to address the communications and informatics public health interdisciplinary/cross-cutting competency area.
