Public health students celebrate their many cultures

Every day, the School of Public Health is filled with students and faculty representing numerous countries of origin.
The only difference on April 5 was that a number of students dressed up in traditional costumes from their native countries and set up display tables showcasing facts and artifacts representing their homelands.
Ten countries were represented in the table displays, plus another exhibiting native Alaskan culture. The countries were India, Jamaica, Cameroon, Iceland, Thailand, Iran, Mexico, Palestine, Egypt, and Nigeria.

Global health student David Adesanya, from Nigeria, organized the event.
“I love seeing people together, having a good time,” he says. “And it’s always good to have people come together to experience different cultures.”
The event included food for hungry students and was held in Nichol Hall, which houses both the Schools of Public Health and Allied Health Professions. Students from both schools attended.
The lunch was held in honor of a week set aside in the School of Public Health for remembering its various cultures.
“It was a joyful experience to celebrate diversity at LLU,” says Padma Uppala, PhD, associate professor and chair of the School of Public Health’s diversity committee.
The other committee members are Donn Gaede, MPH; Jayakaran Job, MD, DrPH; and Pramil Singh, DrPH.
