The Loma Linda University Department of Earth and Biological Sciences, located within the Graduate School, offers programs in Biology and geology. Graduate degrees offered by the biology program include an MS and a PhD in biology. The geology Program offers a BS and an MS in geology. All graduate degrees offered involve substantial individual research and the completion of a thesis or dissertation, and are designed to prepare students for careers in their respective disciplines.
The research interests of earth and biological sciences faculty include ecological physiology, behavioral ecology, herpetology, marine biology, taphonomy, and the paleoenvironments of Cenozoic rocks. Students may also choose projects with associate faculty in such LLU departments as microbiology, anatomy, physiology, immunology, and in the Graduate Biology Program at Andrews University.
Loma Linda University is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian institution. The Department of Earth and Biological Sciences encourages open discussion of the challenges Christians face in dealing with the interactions between science and the Christian faith. Students of many religious and even non-religious persuasions are accepted into the program.
